Mini-Documentary: Busking in New York City

Writer: monetguilbeaumonetguilbeau

In Video 1 class at Columbia's Journalism School, I was immediately outfitted with a Canon XF400, a tripod, and a myriad of microphones. We were tasked with creating a miniature documentary, covering whatever topic we so choose.

Instantaneously, I knew I wanted to cover NYC's buskers, namely, those who perform in the subway system.

I researched, pitched, coordinated, shot, tracked, and edited this documentary solo.

I found buskers by exploring the subway system, hopping off at random stations and listening for the echo of live music bouncing off the platform. I spoke to a litany of performers from all walks of life, and through these conversations, created the documentary you see above.

I dedicate this documentary to my phenomenal professors, Sebastian Tuinder and Juanita Cellabos. You broke down everything for us, and with grace. From file hygiene to crossfades and J-cuts, this piece wouldn't stand as strong.

I also dedicate this documentary to every busker performing in New York City.

You performers hustle, dragging rigs around the world, just to bring a joy to commuter's days. You're priceless to me and thousands of others, thank you for doing what you do.

Special thanks to Gabriel Galdort, Chrissy R., Morf, and every busker I crossed paths with while creating this story. Thank you for sharing your time, story, and passions with me.

This piece will remain close to my heart forever. Enjoy!

P.S. DON'T FORGET TO TIP THE BUSKERS YOU LOVE :)
